Making Maine Sugarworks Maple Syrup

Winter is the heart of New England...

Working in the Sugarbush
Time to Tap!
Work on the syrup operation
continues year-round. Our pipeline
network requires constant
maintenance, and we are always
looking for ways to improve the
system. Straight, tight and
downhill is the sugarmakers creed
when running tubing.
When daytime temps begin to make it
to the upper 30's, it is tapping time!
Each maple tree is inspected to see how
last year's tap holes have healed.
New holes are drilled and the spiles are
lightly tapped in and connected to
buckets or to the pipeline. The kids
love to try and catch the first drip of
sap on their tongues. The sugarbush rings
with the sound of sap pinging against
the bottom of freshly hung buckets.
When working in the sugarbush, you spend a lot of time looking up at the
crown of the tree. This tree's tap hole has healed well.
